Summer updates, CK (Not Calvin Klein), and Frog Poop

I know I keep saying this, whenever I get my sorry a$$ over here to finally post, but I am a terrible blogger. I can't use work as an excuse since we are on summer hiatus... August is around the corner, and from there it goes faster than you can say "reading, writing, arithmetic!"

The summer so far has been filled mostly with Loryn's enrichment classes, which I am happy to report were a success. Krafty Kids and Cool Candy Creations for three weeks, followed by one solid week at the local ceramics place. She really LOVED the pottery classes, especially since they dabbled in many other types of activities, including tie-dye, mosaics. painting with toes (yes, toes) on canvas, and traditional ceramics projects. Maybe once we pick up all her wares after their firing, I will photograph the whole lot.

We took a weekend trip to Hershey, PA. Sad to say, it was Loryn's first time ever in a hotel. We have not really traveled since we started this little family, but we plan to change that. The kids had a ball, and so did we. Lots of rides, water park fun, and of course-- CHOCOLATE! We (well, I) forgot to pack Hanna's bah-kee (forgive the spelling, I have never really thought about how to spell it.) That is, her security blanket... this old, ratty crocheted blanket that was Loryn's. It is now so threadbare and coming apart throughout. She loves the old thing and sleeps with it for naps and at night. Well, some quick thinking on my feet, and I came up with a plan. I told her that hotels have very special bah-kees... super soft and just the right color. I was glad to see that they did indeed stock the rooms with those velour-ish blankets- I think they are called Velux. We made a realy big deal about it, and whether she was convinced or simply just exhausted, she did go to sleep. She talks now about the bah-kee and the "hotel home." Isn't that precious? She hunted her true bah-kee down the minute we arrived home. I promise photos of our trip soon.

We have been to the beach only twice, sorry to report. I have no excuse for that except that the whole undertaking can be exhausting. They love being at the ocean this year... fearless Hanna and newly courageous (to a degree) Loryn play together in the shallow depths, feeding the waves mud meatballs just like I did when I was a kid. Do you think it's a genetic predisposition? Photos of the beach coming soon too...
....................................................................................

I had a funny little happy moment the other day, reading through my September issue of CK/Creating Keepsakes. For anyone who isn't familiar, this is the mother of all scrapbooking periodicals, and one of the biggies which has never (not yet) chosen to publish a layout submitted my little old me. I was reading through the feature called Fresh Faces, where layouts are featured from five scrappers never before published in CK. At the end of the feature, I look for the little blue box that says "We loved these layouts, too!" Now, mind you, they only place ten names here, and no actual layouts. It's meant to be some sort of consolation prize for people who submit but don't get published. I look through to see if I recognize any names... I had recently seen my digi-cyber-scrapping-idol-friend Darla Vasquez appropriately listed in a previous issue (her layouts should be featured every month, she is an amazing artist who inspires me daily.)

Well, lo' and behold... my name was there! Can you imagine the big stupid grin I was wearing after I looked twice and even wondered whether it might be someone else? I sat in my living room wishing I had someone in my circle to share this little nugget with (I know it is a very little nugget!) Sadly, though, no one in my "in real life" circle would really get it. People around here don't scrap, let alone scrap digitally. Oh well, I know that any scrap friends who happen across this post will do a little happy dance for me... I came darn close to having my digital layout published in CK (no small feat in the primarily paper-driven craft!) And do you want to know the really funny part? I have no clue which layout it was that this CK staff member "loved!" I could guess, but usually I submit several things... and many weeks or months pass between by periods of being submitting-addicted.

I'll end with a really funny, completely unrelated little story that might just make you laugh your a$$ off. I was driving down the road in my mama-mobile, both girls in the back seat. Loryn picks up a bottled water to take a swig. Hanna, serious as can be, looks over and says to Loryn-

Can I have a sip of your water, Loryn? I have frog poop in my mouth.

Quick-thinking big sister replied-
Hanna, I think you mean you have a frog in your throat

Hanna, who is coming to an age where big sister can not tell her anything, steadfastly retorts-
NO, I don't have a frog in my throap (sic)... I have FROG POOP IN MY MOUTH!

Loryn gave her the water. The conversation ended there, but I nearly had to pull over to the side of the road for the tears in my eyes due to laughing so hard.

These little people surely do keep me amused. If you made it this far, please let me know you stopped by. Thanks!

Gone {Hybrid}

Yep, that's right. I have officially dipped my big toe into the pool of traditional scrapping. Mod Podge, altered items, book ring, fancy ribbon, and many hours later... here it is! My first-ever hybrid project... an altered CD mini album! Made from old unused CDs, my digital layouts in perfect circles of 4.75 inches, and the aforementioned supplies, it turned out pretty well if I do say so myself! I'm not too proficient with the Mod Podge, though. Let's just say it is not as forgiving a medium as I imagined it would be. Live and learn, I suppose... and better late than never. For your enjoyment, I present....

A new venture...

...in the world of scrapbooking! I am working on an altered CD album, and today I finished the last of the pages. To create the pages, I used a set of premade digital pages from a collection called Summer Whimsy by Genevieve of oscraps.com. This and many other products are being sold to benefit the family of one of their talented designers, Carla Gibson, who passed away recently. What a strong and generous community we have in the digital scrapbooking world... many designers from many sites have come together to contribute to this cause.

So tonight Ed and the girls and I all ran to the craft store to pick up something I never thought I would ever purchase... Mod-Podge! Tomorrow I will go to Staples to pick up matte photo paper and a big book ring. The rest I will leave up to your imaginations... tune back in for photos of the final product. In the meantime, check out my preview pages! They chronicle the three years and 4 months our two sweet daughters have grown together...

180 Days

In just that brief amount of time, a child can grow and change in ways that boggle this mom's mind. These photos were taken on the first day of first grade and the last day, which was just this week. Look at my girl's smile, for one thing. She lost both top teeth this year! Look at the shape of her face and her expression. There is very little "little girl" left in my first born, and I have to tell you... it makes me a little melancholy. (Anyone who knows me at all will not be one bit surprised by that!)

This was not an easy year of schooling for Loryn. I really wanted to show her growth and changes with a layout that communicates the excitement of these momentous days at the start and end of the academic year... do you think I went a little overboard? This one took on a life of its own!

Rollin' in Scrap Dough!

What a fun week! I entered two layouts in challenges by a couple of today's most popular designers, and guess what!!! I was awarded a $10 gift certificate to each of their stores!
I just love these fun Tiny Beaded Bits by Amy Martin of the-lilypad.com! She picked my layout and some others too, although I can't find out who the other winners were. I can't wait to spend my loot... Amy's elements ROCK! Thank you, Amy!

Is there anything Gina Miller can't design? These Bubbly Suds are just the cutest! I love how they look with a deep shadow. That took some fiddling, though. I created a shadow and made it into its own layer. Then, with a layer mask, I was able to hide the portion of the shadow that showed under the translucent bubbles. That is a handy trick for applying shadows to your clear objects... can't have that darkness distorting the color of your element, right?

Gina chose several other really adorable layouts, and we all received a gift certificate to her store. Just in time, I might add. She has a whole slew of new items including some amazing glitter elements!

Blowing bubbles is harder than it looks!

Look at how hard Hanna tries! She takes a big breath and blows too hard. Then I noticed, upon close examination of these photos, that she actually blows upward. Look- her hair is standing straight up! The perfect pucker eludes her...

Well, I finally gave in to the pressure...

Well, I finally caved in to the pressure. I had been noticing these Crocs since last summer, and honestly I thought they looked a little silly. I mean, who wears these colors? They are even more popular this year... they are everywhere! I will admit that they look adorable on little feet. They will be perfect quick trips to the market and for jumping in and out of the sandbox! Play, rinse, repeat!

Don't my two sweeties look so cute wearing their new kicks? In case you are wondering about this head-clutching pose, this is how a big sister wrangles her baby sister for the camera. I promise, no young people were harmed during the taking of these photos...

Some layouts...

I promise to write an update soon... I want to snap some pics of Loryn and her new smile. She lost both of her top incisors! She looks so adorable, and she's all lisp-y now. The photos I snapped tonight didn't turn out, so you'll have to wait... sorry!

Hanna is jabbering up a storm, and we are understanding more and more. She goes on and on so fast sometimes. It can be hard to pick up a lot of it, but her intonations, gestures, and facial expressions are priceless. She is developing a healthy fear of bugs... just in time for spring. She saw a little bug crawling on the floor and came running to tell me all about it. Along the way, she grabbed a sneaker of mine, and she said, "You have to shoe it, Mommy! Hurry!" LOL! Serious as can be, she was!

As promised... some recent layouts:
